Grandparents Day Celebration

September 10, 2017

Grandparents Day is a national holiday celebrated on the first Sunday of September. The purpose of the holiday is to acknowledge the role of grandparents in the lives of their children and grandchildren. Our grandmothers and grandfathers offer us their unconditional love and support and are ready to give us their helping hand at any moment. So let’s celebrate their holiday!

Origin of the Holiday

The founder of Grandparents Day was Marian McQuade. This woman dedicated a lot of her time to educating young people of her community in West Virginia about the importance of senior citizens. Her efforts were so impressing that on August 3 1978, President Carter proclaimed Grandparents Day to be a national holiday.

Unlike some other national holidays, there is no all-national way of celebrating Grandparents Day. Every family has their own traditions. Yet, the main point of the celebration is always the same: children, parents, and grandparents spend some quality time together. On that day, they play games together, go for a walk or visit a coffee shop, etc.  In addition, grandparents receive presents on that holiday. Especially valuable for them are those, which their grandchildren made with their own hands.

Ideas for Grandparents Day

  1. Picnic

It would be a great idea to prepare a basket with tasty food and a blanket and take your grandparents to a scenery place. If you don’t have any lakes or forest in your area, a park could do very well. The only thing is that the weather in September can be very tricky. You should check the weather forecast twice before planning this activity.

  1. Board Games

Playing some board games or solving puzzles together is a nice way for children to bond with their grandparents. Prepare several different games in case everybody gets bored completing the same jigsaw puzzle or playing monopoly.

  1. Cooking Together

You can spend this day cooking some delicious meals together. In such a way, you will have enough time to talk about your life, tell each other funny stories and drink some tea or coffee. Also, grandparents will be able to teach their grandchildren some cooking skills and share their best cooking secrets.

  1. Singing Songs

If your family is into singing, you can sing together on Grandparents Day. It’s also a great way for grandparents and grandchildren to know each other better since you can make a list of songs which would include favorite songs of both generations. To add some competition spirit, you can organize a singing contest with some small prizes for every participant.

To conclude, it is very important to celebrate Grandparents Day to show our grandmas and grandpas how much we appreciate their love and support.

Happy Grandparents Day!
